Research

How research works, how to speed it up, and for each technology what it costs and what it unlocks.

ChaptersChapter 9 of 19

Almost everything in CivCraft sits behind technology: structures, wonders, town levels, governments, gear and units. Research is done by the civilization, not the town. All towns of a civ share the same technology.

The Library gives your town 50 beakers per hour.

How it works

Only leaders and advisers start research.

  • /civ research list shows which technologies you can research now, and their cost.
  • /civ research on <tech> starts a research, for example /civ research on Mining.
  • /civ research progress shows how far you are, how many beakers you make per hour and how many hours are left.
  • /civ research finished shows what your civ already knows.
  • /civ research change <tech> switches to another tech.

A technology has two prices:

  • Coins, paid up front from the civ treasury.
  • Beakers, which the civ then makes each hour until the tech is done.

You research one technology at a time, and you have to know all required technologies first. The Capitol has to be fully built before you can start. The board of coloured wool in the Capitol shows the progress.

How fast it goes

Your civ makes a number of beakers per hour. A tech of 500 beakers takes 10 hours at 50 beakers per hour.

The beakers per hour are the sum of all towns of the civ, plus 1. A town makes beakers from:

  • each chunk in its culture, according to the biome. Ocean, swamp and ice plains give most; see the table in Culture and happiness;
  • a Library: 50 per hour, plus a bonus per ocean or desert chunk in the culture.

That total is multiplied by:

  • the happiness of the town: from 20% at Revolt to 150% at Ecstatic;
  • the government: only half during Anarchy;
  • the Innovation buff of a trade good: +10% each;
  • the wonder The Great Library: +10% for the whole civ.

Researching faster

  1. Build a Library as soon as you have Productivity. It is the biggest jump early on.
  2. Grow your culture. A larger border means more chunks and so more beakers. A Monument and a Temple help.
  3. Keep your towns happy. A Happy town researches 15% faster; an unhappy one loses a quarter or more.
  4. Send tax to science. With /civ set taxes and /civ set science part of your towns' income is turned into beakers, at 10 coins per beaker.
  5. Found more towns. Their beakers add to those of the capital.
  6. Look for the trade goods Papyrus, Incense, Coffee or Whale. They carry the Innovation buff.
  7. Do not switch government in the middle of an expensive research. Anarchy halves your beakers for 24 hours.

When no research is running your beakers are not lost: they become culture.

What do I need for…

Look up here what you want to build, craft or choose. The table shows the technology that unlocks it and what the whole path to it costs, all required technologies counted in.

Step 11

Where to start

The four technologies of step 1 cost 500 beakers and 5,000 coins each. Each opens a different road.

  • Mining leads to Productivity and so to the Library, the Mine and the Despotism government. The best start for most civs.
  • Agriculture gives the Farm, and leads to Pottery for the Granary and to Hunting for the Grocer and the Pasture.
  • Religion gives the Bank and the Monument, and leads to Code of Laws for the Hamlet town level.
  • Armory gives the Barracks, and leads to the first weapons and armour.

A good first goal is Library, Granary and Cottages: the Library speeds up all later research, and Cottages pay the upkeep.
