Getting started

What CivCraft is, what you get on arrival and what to do on your first evening.

ChaptersChapter 1 of 19

CivCraft is Minecraft with civilizations. You start as a nomad, build a camp, found a civilization with a capital, research technology and build structures that actually do something. Other civilizations become allies or enemies. Every Saturday there are two hours of war.

This guide follows that path from start to finish.

The path in short

  1. Nomad. You arrive in the spawn city with a starting kit and a free Camp.
  2. Camp. Walk at least 1000 blocks away and set up your Camp. The camp gives you a safe place, coins and Tokens of Leadership.
  3. Civilization. With 36 tokens and a series of materials you craft the Founding Civilization Flag. It founds a civ with a capital.
  4. Growth. You claim land, research technology, build structures and invite people.
  5. The world. You trade, form alliances, wage war and play for one of the four victories.

Arriving

Pick CivCraft in the hub compass or type /server civcraft-01.

You arrive on the crossing of the spawn city: the Market in the north, the Bank and the Grocer in the middle and the Capitol in the south. The city is protected. You cannot build there, there is no PvP and no monsters spawn. The signs in the city explain the basics and the shops work for everyone.

  1. 1. Market
  2. 2. Bank
  3. 3. Grocer
  4. 4. Capitol
The spawn city from above. You arrive on the crossing in the middle.

On your first login this happens:

  • The CivCraft Tutorial window opens. What it says is in The info book.
  • You get 250 coins and the starting kit below.
  • You get one free Camp. It is the door in your inventory. Only you can use it.
  • You are protected from PvP for 120 minutes. /res pvptimer turns that protection off early.

Your first evening

  1. Look at the map. The web map shows every town, its culture border and its structures. It tells you where there is still room.
  2. Walk at least 1000 blocks from spawn. Nobody can found anything closer. /here shows whose land you are standing on.
  3. Choose your spot with care. The biome decides what your town will yield later, and bedrock pillars mark trade goods that are worth a lot. More in Culture and happiness and Trade goods.
  4. Set up your Camp on flat, solid ground. How that works is in The camp.
  5. Keep the fire burning and start making bread for the longhouse.
Your goal for the first evening: a camp on a flat spot, far enough from spawn.

What is different from normal Minecraft

CivCraft changes a number of rules. Not knowing them costs time.

  • No enchanting table and no anvil. XP orbs turn into coins when you pick them up. You buy enchants at the Library.
  • No Nether and no End. The portals do not work. You buy Nether materials at the Store.
  • Weapons and armour have their own recipes. The normal recipes for swords, bows, armour and most pickaxes are removed. You craft the CivCraft versions, see Gear.
  • Animals only breed in a Pasture. It does not work in the wild. You buy horses at the Stable; wild horses cannot be ridden.
  • Potions need technology. Without the right tech you cannot drink them. Golden apples and invisibility potions never work.
  • Bone meal does not work on wheat, carrots and potatoes. Crops grow on a Farm.
  • No lava inside the culture of another civ.
  • Logging out during a fight is dangerous. When another person hits you, you are tagged for 120 seconds. If you log out then, a zombie with your name stays behind for 30 seconds. Whoever kills it gets your items.

Coins

CivCraft has its own currency, separate from the rest of the network.

  • /econ shows your balance.
  • /pay <name> <amount> pays someone.
  • /trade <name> opens a trade window. You have to stand within 10 blocks of each other.

Where coins come from and where they go is in Economy.

Help in the game

  • /res book gives the info book again.
  • /camp help, /town help, /civ help, /build help and /plot help each show their own commands.
  • All commands are also in Commands, and what often goes wrong in Troubleshooting.
